Fissure Sealants

FISSURE SEALANTS play an important role in prevention of tooth decay.
Teeth have natural grooves on their surface which are called as fissures. These pits and fissures are very common on molars and pre-molars, and at times can also be found on the inner surface of the incisors and canines. If the pits and fissures are very deep, they could cause entrapment of food which is difficult to clean. This in turn leads to decay.
Fissure sealing is a non-invasive and painless procedure which involves sealing the groove with a resin cement onto the cleaned tooth. Once the sealant hardens, which is almost immediate, it prevents further entrapment of food and the risk of decay.
Fissure sealants may wear with time but statistically reduce the chance of decay by 50%. Baby molars can also benefit a lot with fissure sealants.
