DENTAL IMPLANTS are the best way to replace a missing tooth or several missing teeth. They very closely mimic the function and aesthetics of a natural tooth. Implant-supported dentures are also a very common procedure for stabilising removable dentures, which is a boon to denture-wearers.
Dental Implants are small Titanium posts which are fixed into the jaw-bone. The procedure usually involves three stages:

• The first stage involves the insertion of the implant into the bone with sequential drilling.
• The secong stage involves the attachment of a healing cap on the implant which helps in shaping the gums.
• The third stage involves the removal of the healing cap and then attaching an abutment to the implant which supports the artificial crown. Special abutments are also available for supporting dentures.

These procedures are carried out under local anaesthesia. After the first stage, the dental implant is left alone for almost four to six months, for healing. During this healing period, some form of temporary replacement of the missing teeth could be provided, depending on the situation.
